Chapter 20

CLAIRE MOONE. CHARNOCK RICHARD, M6, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND

There was a vibration on Claire’s right thigh. Reaching into the pocket, she extracted her personal cell phone, amazed it still had service. She’d missed three calls and there was a text saying she’d received a voicemail. She activated the screen. She didn’t recognize the number, but it was the same one for all three calls. Whoever it was, they knew her private number, so it belonged to her closest circle of contacts. That, or it was a consistent misdial by someone panicking. Either way, she selected to go to her voicemail.

First message: “Hi. Not got much time.” She recognized the voice. “It’s Frobisher.” She’d known him far too long to know he wouldn’t just be calling to say hello, if he didn’t have time to talk. “I’ve been hired to deliver an unusual cargo. There’s a company moving some of those cicadas from the US to other parts of the world. Taking some to Africa. Couldn’t call sooner, as not much signal at sea. Some went missing. I’ve been able to trace one ship. It’s heading to the Port of Liverpool Deep Sea Terminal. You got that? Don’t let them dock or land their cargo. Keep them off the coast.”

She’d heard there were massive swarms of cicadas in the States and Australia, but they weren’t native to the UK, so she’d seen no immediate threat. “The ship is called Maid of Morning. It’s Chinese registered and in international waters. That’s all I’ve got for you. Good luck finding it. Stay safe.”

She pressed repeat and gave the handset to her father. “I have something you need to hear.” As he listened to it, his mood changed. Processing the information transformed him. When he handed the phone back to her, he was Artemis. “Action it. Do as you must.”

“Yes, sir.” Her thoughts were as clear as she expected his to be. “Nerd, the nearest airbase is RAF Woodvale. See what they’ve got that can be fueled and ready to go, by the time we get there. See what you can get on the Maid of Morning.”

As they rolled out, Artemis voiced his thoughts. “The idea of a cicada swarm on home soil is not one I’ve spent time thinking about. Our physical geography, being an island state, protects us from such things. These insects are being transported on purpose. They’re being weaponized.”

From what Ron Frobisher had said, her father was perhaps being over-dramatic. Some of the insects were on a boat, far out at sea. They were being transported for unknown reasons, yet Artemis had to see it as being purposeful, threatening, and a weapon. She had to see things with a more pragmatic view; stop ship at sea. Problem solved.

Claire could either use the radio to contact Command, or she could use her phone to call the only person she ever answered to. Intercepted, an uncoded broadcast to either could cause a political incident with China. She would have to keep details to a minimum, until she had access to a secure connection.
